GATEKEEPING: Ethics in Teaming

Wikipedia defines: Gatekeeping is the process through which information is filtered for dissemination, in all modes of communication.  Ethical gatekeeping requires “taking the higher ground” and other times, our gatekeeping is done with so much ease we are unaware of our participation in the process.

What values do we bring to each decision?  After an entire day, walking in, instantly discovering the clients were not served well, what do we do?  While Interpreting an IEP meeting, incorrect information is disclosed, what is our role?  Hospital emergencies, placement and eye contact show we value the client, how?  When recognizing “having our team’s back” – or the “willingness” to enhance skills and mental preparation for each experience  - we practice GATEKEEPING.
