Examining the Unique Challenges of Trilingual Interpreting: A Summary of Recent Research
This informative presentation examines the unique linguistic challenges Spanish Video Relay Service presents. A summary of research is provided, outlining research questions related to how interpreters handle: Spanish regionalisms and ASL that contains regionalisms or other influence from a Latin American sign language, nouns that are gender-neutral in ASL but gendered in Spanish, pronunciation of ambiguous names, and interpreting “you” to the hearing Spanish-speaker on the line. In addition, it summarizes other recent research into trilingual interpreting, leaving participants informed and up-to-date.
