Nearly every interpreter has heard, “just put everything on your mouth and you will be fine!” This workshop will provide a better understanding of why “just putting everything on your mouth” is NOT enough. We will provide the methodology of oral interpreting, along with how and when it is used. Our goal is for you to have a better understanding of who uses speechreading and how oral interpreting requires special support techniques to be used while providing this verbatim interpretation. As an interpreter, you will see how these techniques will help improve your transliteration skills.

The Code of Professional Conduct (CPC) guides interpreters through the process of making decisions that are ethical and defensible. In this workshop we will talk about what is ethical and unethical behavior. We will practice using the CPC to make some decisions of our own and to evaluate decisions other interpreters made.

“Roles, Conflicts & Disclosures: Research Discussion”

Interpreting in the legal setting is a complex task in which multifaceted factors such as the setting, individuals involved, roles of those participating individuals, expanded ethical considerations, and the language of the legal system require specialization from the interpreter practitioner (Berk-Seligson, 2002; Mathers, 2007; Russell, 2000; Simon, 1993). During this workshop, we will discuss the demographics of the practitioners, including education, training, and background, as well as explore inconsistencies in the way best practices are applied in daily practice, specifically conflicts and disclosures, interpreter roles, and the definition of legal interpreting. The results if this study provide a glimpse of the legal interpreting specialization as it currently stands and potential implications for future practice and study. Studies show that Emotional Intelligence (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management) carries more weight in predicting career success than IQ. Emotional Intelligence is a critical aspect of soft skills, and is tied to the often discussed and yet elusive concept of attitude. New interpreters often find managing the physical and cognitive demands of the field to be more challenging than they anticipated. Increased knowledge about your emotional intelligence enhances your ability to those manage challenges. Your ability to effectively deal with emotions is important to the success of every aspect of working in this field, from engaging with consumers, colleagues, agencies and supervisors, to continued professional and self growth. You will learn about your own emotional intelligence and increase your emotional vocabulary. We will teach you how to manage emotional hi-jacking, and to leverage mindful presence to positively influence your working environment and relationships.

“Visual Language Literacy for Beginner Interpreters”

Interpreters by definition, are fluent in two languages: in our case, ASL and English. The essence of English literacy is the ability to read, write and express the language. Being literate in ASL, however, also entails having capacity for visual-spatial literacy on top of the usual requirements. This presentation will discuss various aspects of visual-spatial literacy and approaches to infuse them into ASL and interpretation programs. It will offer tools and resources which instructors can incorporate easily and immediately into curriculum materials. Lastly, it will discuss how the lack of these skills impacts Deaf Consumers, making their experience in the interpreting process more laborious.

“Medical Interpreting Series: An Overview of Medical Interpreting Ethics for Interpreters”

According to the IMIA Guide on Medical Interpreter Ethical Conduct, by Eva Hernandez-Iverson, “the practice of medical interpreting is fraught with ethical dilemmas and decision making.” Ms. Hernandez-Iverson further states that “Ethics are defined as the study of standards of conduct and moral judgment, the system or code of morals of a particular person, religion, group, or profession.” Traditionally, the ASL interpreter has based ethical decision-making solely on the Code of Professional Conduct, however in recent years, the role of the medical interpreter has been further expanded to include additional documents that aid in the decision-making process. This workshop will guide interpreters interested in the field of medical interpreting to better understand and utilize these standards in their work. Participants will review and compare a number of documents.

“Whose Role is it Anyway?”

Interpreting in the legal setting is one of the heaviest responsibilities an ASL/English interpreter can undertake. It is critical that interpreters working in these settings have a solid understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the legal interpreter. However, research shows that many interpreters do not or cannot identify which role is being enacted in legal settings (Smith, 2016). This workshop will explain the responsibilities of each role (proceedings, investigative, and interpreter for the counsel) and when the roles are enacted, including when roles may be collapsed and when they cannot be collapsed. This workshop will also discuss the laws and statutes that apply to the work interpreters do in the legal settings in the context of interpreter roles. This workshop is designed to benefit both novice and experienced legal interpreters.

“Investigating evidence of Ethical Fitness Part 1”

Interpreters must make countless decisions on any given work day. These decisions have a direct impact, both positive and negative, on the people with whom we work “ both Deaf and non-deaf. While challenging, not all of these decisions are ethical. Rushworth Kidder (1995) offers the concept of ethical fitness as a framework to help us understand our decisions when faced with ethical dilemmas and the need to make tough choices. In our time together, we will investigate this concept of ethical fitness, and all of its parts, in terms of our work as interpreters. In an environment of collegiality and mutual respect, we will identify the various parts of an interpreters’ ethical fitness, dig more deeply into some of those areas, and engage in discussion that will lead us to a deeper understanding about ourselves as ethically fit interpreters.

Spanish Heritage speakers are bilinguals who have grown up in Spanish-speaking environments in the United States, having varying degrees of language fluency. This unique group has oral proficiency but may have little or no formal Spanish training. Heritage learners often face difficulties between Spanish oral proficiency and English intellectual and academic proficiency.

Spanish Native speakers are persons whose primary academic and extensive schooling took place in Spanish-speaking countries. This group has acquired extensive Spanish oral and academic proficiency, but after immigrating to the United States may have some difficulties with English proficiency.

This is a comparative discussion between English and Spanish.
The Presenter will identify issues that are historically problematic for English/Spanish bilingual speakers. The Presenter will discuss various resources to help participants provide interpreting services in their communities. Participants will be helped to develop intra-lingual strategies through the discussion. Participants will leave the session understanding the similarities and differences between the two languages.

This workshop will cover the basics of working with a CDI and will cover the main events of an interpreting job between CHI and CDI. The workshop will cover the initial introduction to the clients at a job, the seating/standing arrangements for everyone involved, how to feed each other, and some other tips on how to work with each other. This workshop will also dispel some myths of working with CDIs.

“Making More Sense: Interpreting Psychological Assessments”

This workshop covers many issues that arise when interpreting psychological assessments. Due to the nature of the assignment and purpose of assessments, conflicts frequently arise. This interactive workshop shall cover issues of confidentiality, code of ethics, vocabulary, rapport, and transference for interpreters. Practical examples, case studies, and lessons shall demonstrate numerous simple, proven, and effective techniques to enhance the interpretation of various psychological assessments. By understanding the nature of the test instruments used, conflicts inherent in various standardized tests, the goals of common psychological questions and language acceptable accommodations and modifications, and respectful ways to advocate for better sessions, the experience for the consumer, interpreter, and psychologist can be improved. Attendees will benefit from examples of cases, test items, procedures, and materials by the presenter, a former interpreter and current school psychologist who works with D/HH students as well as consults to most of the world’s psychological test developers.

Spanish Heritage speakers are bilinguals who have grown up in Spanish-speaking environments in the United States, having varying degrees of language fluency. This unique group has oral proficiency but may have little or no formal Spanish training. Heritage learners often face difficulties between Spanish oral proficiency and English intellectual and academic proficiency.

Spanish Native speakers are persons whose primary academic and extensive schooling took place in Spanish-speaking countries. This group has acquired extensive Spanish oral and academic proficiency, but after immigrating to the United States may have some difficulties with English proficiency.

This is a comparative discussion between English and Spanish.
The Presenter will identify issues that are historically problematic for English/Spanish bilingual speakers. The Presenter will discuss various resources to help participants provide interpreting services in their communities. Participants will be helped to develop intra-lingual strategies through the discussion. Participants will leave the session understanding the similarities and differences between the two languages.

Interpreters must make countless decisions on any given work day. These decisions have a direct impact, both positive and negative, on the people with whom we work “ both Deaf and non-deaf. While challenging, not all of these decisions are ethical. Rushworth Kidder (1995) offers the concept of ethical fitness as a framework to help us understand our decisions when faced with ethical dilemmas and the need to make tough choices. In our time together, we will investigate this concept of ethical fitness, and all of its parts, in terms of our work as interpreters. In an environment of collegiality and mutual respect, we will identify the various parts of an interpreters™ ethical fitness, dig more deeply into some of those areas, and engage in discussion that will lead us to a deeper understanding about ourselves as ethically fit interpreters.

“Trilingual Interpreting and the Politics of Tackling Migration and Identity”

Trilingual interpreters will undoubtedly work with consumers who have migrated to the U.S. with varied educational experiences and attitudes from their home countries that may or may not shape their communication. This workshop will begin with exploring the healthcare, educational, and legal systems of Latin-American countries and the Caribbean, as well as offer a discussion on how the respective schema of the Latinx signing community affects language and communication. The workshop will then continue with an exploration of foundational knowledge of the U.S migration process and continue to touch on cultural awareness and identity and how it applies to the work of a trilingual interpreter. While this workshop is geared toward trilingual interpreters, it is open to all interpreters, as current migration systems and policies are of current and broad interest. Participants are asked to bring devices such as tablets and/or laptops for hands-on activities.

“Taming the Inner Critic”

The inner critic or critical inner voice refers to a judgemental part inside of us that demeans, disapproves or expresses frustration with us or our actions. It is characterized by persistent negative self-talk. The inner critic helps us feel in control and manage fear and the unknown, and some believe these guilt-inducing messages will motivate change. Unfortunately, the inner critic tends to generate anxiety and shame, which lead to avoidance and keep us “stuck.” When interpreting, the voice of the inner critic can become intrusive and distract us from the work we need to do. In this workshop, participants will develop a different and more compassionate relationship with their inner critics and understand the function of these critical voices, as well as how that function goes awry. Attendees will learn three concrete techniques to address negative self-talk and develop a concrete plan to leverage self-talk.

“The Art of Platform Interpreting”

Platform interpreting is becoming more and more common now that ASL is becoming more accepted as a language in America. The Super bowl Star Spangled Banner interpreting is an example of platform interpreting, and it ranges from conferences of sorts to religious gatherings to governmental announcements. This workshop will focus on the skills of platform interpreting for both the Hearing interpreter and the Deaf interpreter. Trenton Marsh CDI gave a workshop and he has a diagram that I will be showing, the diagram is what I call the Marsh Theory, and it is very applicable for this workshop.

“Depicting a Scene: Depiction and Proficiency in ASL”

Depiction refers to “the ability to visually represent semantic components”(Dudis, 2007:1). This workshop will begin with an overview of depiction and depiction types in ASL (based on Dudis’ current flowchart). Information will include categories of depiction, frequency of depiction in language use, and information from a study on depiction and proficiency in ASL. Preliminary results from this study show that less proficient signers depicted between 4-8 instances per minute as compared to proficient (native) signers who depicted an average of 22 times per minute. Participants will view video clips and discuss instances of depiction of a variety of types. Participants will also practice incorporating depiction into their own language use and practice interpreting segments of discourse with depiction.

We will then apply the Code of Professional Conduct to see why certain interpretations of these passages may be a more ethical choice for the congregation or consumers involved. “Interpreter Services: Before Disaster Strikes”

Emergency managers have an obligation to communicate with the whole community. We will cover portions of the State Emergency Management Tool Kit that impact the deaf community and interpreter services and discuss ways to establish interpreter services before disaster strikes.
