Mental Health Interpreting: Letting Some Light into the Black Box

This workshop is designed as an interactive "101" to provide core information on interpreting in mental health settings.  Mental health professional roles and environments will be discussed.  Participants will have the opportunity to interactively explore demands unique to mental health interpreting, such as the Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE).

The challenge of voicing for dysfluent clients will be discussed, and strategies for rendering accurate messages and providing helpful information for mental health clinicians will be provided.  Differences in dysfluency between clients with mental illness and those with developmental language deprivation will also be addressed.  The workshop will touch on mental health concepts such as transference, countertransference, therapeutic effectiveness, mandatory reporting, and personal safety/vicarious trauma.  The RID Mental Health Standard Practice Paper will be reviewed, with focus on how participants can safely gain more knowledge in the arena of mental health interpreting.
