Workshop

Educational Interpreting: Then and Now

In 2002, the late Gary Sanderson challenged the participants at the National Interpreter Confernce to read the "Green Book". This 6-hour workshop looks at the 1989 National Task Force on Educational Interpreting report from a K-12 perspective. It portrayed what the K-12 interpreting environment entailed then. How has the interpreting setting changed? What do educational interpreters wish they had known when they graduated from their Interpreter Training Programs (ITPs)? What do teachers in ITPs need to know in order for graduates to successfully integrate into a public school environment? This workshop will look at 1) parents’ decision- making on educational placement for their child, 2) the communication philosophy of the program, 3) roles & responsibilities of the interpreter and how they change, 4) working as a team member and 5) resources.

*Note: This is a six hour workshop. While it is recommended you attend both parts, CEUs will be awarded independently. You do not have to attend both sessions to earn CEUs.
