The Ethics of the Designated Interpreting Team (DIT)

Working within a Designated Interpreting Team (DIT) is a new environment and setting for many interpreters. As more D/deaf professionals enter specialized careers, the need for a competent DIT increases. The thrust of this workshop is to introduce the concept of the DIT to working interpreters and agencies. Within the scope of DIT work, the interpreter experiences a number of ethical demands that may be unique to the role of a Designated Interpreter (DI). Ethical considerations and discussions will be explored interactively, and applied to both the hearing and deaf consumers. Areas to be addressed will include: linguistic demands, negotiation of business arrangements, team selection and interaction, and assessing client needs. This workshop is intended for a range of interpreters, from those just entering the field to seasoned interpreters and agencies seeking to broaden their knowledge of designated interpreting.
