Workshop

ASL and English: Powerless Language and Conversation Styles

You are interpreting from ASL to English and your audience just does not seem to get the intent or seriousness of the Deaf person's message. Did this happen because you missed information or was something else in play?  Have you used ASL signs that seem to distract the consumer, but you do not know why?  Join us as a Deaf and hearing interpreter discuss powerless language forms, conversation styles, vocabulary choice and gender-marked language in ASL and English.  We will examine samples of each of these topics and consider how recognition can positively impact your interpretation and comprehension.  We will examine your current "go-to" style and practice methods meant to enhance your use of these features in cross-cultural mediation and interpretation across a variety of settings.
