Workshop

Social Identity in Hearing Youth Who Have Deaf Parents: A Qualitative Study (ASL Only - NO VOICE INTERPRETER)

Hearing children of Deaf adults (CODA) represent an interesting subgroup of bilingual, bicultural, and bimodal children with diverse language and cultural backgrounds.  There are two criteria of being CODA; 1) the person must have normal hearing and 2) the person must have at least one Deaf parent.  This workshop will discuss recent research on social experiences of KODAs, using Tajfel's Social Identity Theory to describe the perspectives of KODAs in relation to their linguistic and cultural identity. Eleven KODAs, ages 11-17, from the western part of US and from a southern state in the US, were recruited for this initial research. This workshop is presented in ASL ONLY - NO VOICE INTERPRETER.
